ABOUT US
Origami Ottawa is a non-profit organization that was started back in 2015. Our passion for origami led us to forming a group in which we could share this passion with people around us to enjoy. We started as a community group and we have grown ever since. We can't wait to see how much this organization continues to grow and the impact we can make.

WHO WE ARE
Benjamin Chinn
Founder and Primary Instructor
Jasper Tian
Director and Secondary Instructor
Benjamin began folding origami at the age of 6. During this time, he was just like any other amateur enthusiast following diagrams from books and instructional videos during the early days of YouTube, armed with nothing more than plain old printer paper. It was a year later when he decided to make his first (and last) YouTube origami tutorials in a failed attempt to rise to fame. To date, the password for the account has still not been recovered, so those videos will presumably be immortalized on the internet.

As a naturally introverted person, Benjamin initially began teaching as a way to improve social skills, public speaking and communication. As years went by, resources improved, instructions became more accessible, and his origami skills improved substantially (his cravings for more premium papers also grew.) As he became accustomed to teaching others, he realized the importance of instructors- from inspiring the next generation of folders to connecting individuals with the power of art. Benjamin teaches through numerous free workshops and classes (mostly aimed at beginners), which still continue to this very day.

In his spare time, Benjamin enjoys spending countless hours folding origami models, especially those by Satoshi Kamiya, Robert Lang, and Eric Joisel; as well, he likes to collect old coins, play piano/violin, tend to the garden, and rear Monarch butterflies. Cooking and exploring cuisine from all parts of the world have become part of his weekly routine, though macarons are one of his all-time favourite things. Last but not least, his ongoing obsession with carnivorous plants, cacti, succulents, various houseplants, and basically all plants in general continues to drive his family totally insane.
